Literary Lisbon & Cultural Modules

Lisbon is one of Europe's great literary capitals — the city of Pessoa, Saramago, and centuries of Atlantic discovery. This unique course uses Lisbon itself as a living classroom, developing culturally-responsive pedagogical approaches that integrate place, literature, and the arts into transformative educational experiences.

An intensive, hands-on programme designed for immediate application in your school context. Each day builds on the previous, culminating in a personalised implementation plan.

Day 1

Lisbon as Living Classroom

Introduction to Lisbon's literary and cultural identity. Fernando Pessoa and heteronyms as a pedagogical tool. Mapping the city: a literary walk through Chiado, Baixa, and Bairro Alto.

Day 2

Maritime Heritage & European Identity

Belém and the Age of Discovery. Os Lusíadas by Camões: exploring epic poetry across cultures. The National Coach Museum and material culture as historical text. Workshop on using heritage sites in teaching.

Day 3

Place-Based Pedagogy & Storytelling

Developing place-based learning projects. Oral history and community storytelling methodologies. Using neighbourhood and city as primary source material. Connecting Lisbon's stories to students' own places.

Day 4

Fado, Music & Cultural Expression

Fado as intangible cultural heritage (UNESCO recognised). Music, emotion, and identity in the classroom. Intercultural dialogue through artistic comparison. Authentic live fado experience in Alfama.

Day 5

Project Design & Certification

Designing a cultural heritage teaching project for your school. Peer sharing: connecting national literary traditions across Europe. Creating teaching resources from the Lisbon experience. Europass certification.
